Year end competitions approach at this time of year and, at Greetham Valley, the annual Staff versus Club is always a popular event in the club as it gives members the opportunity to show their appreciation of the hard work done.
It also allows the opportunity for greenkeeping staff, supported by other staff, to try out the results of their handiwork on the course.
In surprisingly mild conditions, given the amount of rain and wind that had occurred in the previous days, both teams set out on the Lakes course, full of ambition.
As always the staff team were lead by head greenkeeper Adi Porter and in the first match Adi and Alex Porter had a fine win against the president, John Sparks, partnered by Eve Mills; this was in spite of much discussion on handicap allowances.
The staff team continued their winning ways with victories for Frank and Hazel Hinch and Emma Steele and Gareth Watkins, who also won a nearest the pin prize.
In spite of a fightback in the middle matches the final result was a win for the Staff team by 5 – 4.
The trophy was presented to Adi Porter by club captain Fred Aspin.
l On the Monday the Seniors played the first of their Winter League Order of Merit competitions on the Valley course in wet and breezy conditions.
The top places were very keenly fought with the top 10 players only being separated by three shots.
In third place, nine handicapper Tim Nixon scored 34 points despite a double bogy on the first hole. In second place was Ian Jarvis with 35 which included a no score on the par three 16th to mar his round. First place, however, was taken by Bob King (21), with a key par o nthe 17th seeing him finish on 36.
