UPPINGHAM School Girls’ U16 hockey team are celebrating after regaining the Leicestershire county championship.
They they have won the annual title five times in the last six years – and were runners-up 12 months ago.
At St Margaret’s Pastures, Leicester, the U16s saw off the challenge of three other schools to win the honour of representing the county in the Midlands finals at Rugby School in November.
The Uppingham team beat Dixie Grammar School 4-0, and then drew 1-1 with Oakham School.
They faced the challenge of defeating Leicester Grammar School by no fewer than eight goals, as the result would be decided on goal difference. They achieved this with aplomb, triumphing 14-0.
Team coach Maria Barefoot said: “It was a really exciting afternoon with lots of good hockey being played and some superb determination from the Uppingham team.”
