Velo Club Rutland started the 2016 time trial season by fielding two riders in the Sleaford Wheelers CC (Charity) 10 Mile Time Trial on Saturday last week.

Austin Smith and Paul Slater placed 72nd and 73rd respectively in a field of 114 competitors. Smith, riding his first ever open time trial covered the gruelling 10 mile course in a creditable time of 27:49. Smith was very pleased with his time and said at the finish, “I have been training hard since January for the up and coming race season so this was a nice little test to see where I was at.

“It was my first open time trial, I was really happy with the way it all went and how I performed in those conditions on an old road bike against a field of devoted TT bikes and aerodynamic riders.

“The conditions were pretty grim but the return leg was awesome and I placed well.”

Slater, making his return to cycle time trials following a long break due to illness and injury was also happy with his time of 27:55.

Slater said “I am extremely pleased with my time, it is a few minutes off my PB but this time last year I couldn’t walk following surgery for a hip replacement so no complaints. It was a tough day with a strong headwind for the first five miles which took me over 18 minutes to complete. After the turn I was able to benefit from the tailwind and got home in half the time. I am really looking forward to racing again this year and hopefully I can get back to my best.”

The event was won by Mark Arnold of CC Desiragear in 22:14.

Velo Club Rutland commences their Wednesday evening club time trial series on April 13.
