CEREDIGION County Bowlers visited Oakham as part of a week long tour of the East Midlands last week.

The Welshmen secured a thrilling two-shot victory against Oakham’s gentlemen by winning the final end on the last rink.

A meal, provided by Oakham’s ladies, was rounded off by an impromptu rendition of several popular Welsh songs.

Results (Oakham names only: Michele Totaro, Rod Groombridge, Gail Robertson and Ivan Lang won 22-15; Derek Bury, Peter Ferry, Bob Swarbrick and Bob Hammond won 25-24; Bob Spence, Rod Stanley, Rick Tarleton and Denis Smith won 21-20; Vijay Dighe, David Morgan, Nigel Trigg and Barrie Payne lost 19 - 21; Lin Walters, Ray Stace, Brian Neary and Chris Wallis lost 14-16; Eddie Owen, John Poulton, Gwyn Davies and Ron Smurthwaite lost 22-29.

Knighton Victoria 55 Oakham 93

OAKHAM’S bowlers enjoyed a comfortable victory away against Knighton Victoria, winning on four out of five rinks.

Results: Norman Coville, Roger Hale, Gail Robertson and Chris Wallis won 23-10; Roger Lancaster, John Poulton, Barrie Payne and Ron Smurthwaite won 22-11; Lin Walters, Eddie Owen, John Moore and Alan Jones won 18-9; Bob Spence, Tony Flower, Rick Tarleton and Bob Hammond won 21-15; Gwyn Davies, Brian Garner, Denis Smith and Ron Smurthwaite lost 15-16.

OAKHAM’S match against Syston was abandoned after nine ends due to the inglorious summer weather, making this the club’s 12th cancelled or unfinished match out of 32 to date this season.
