Barbarians fade at festival
A TEAM of Oakham RFC members, playing under the name Oakham Barbarians, played well in day one of the 10th annual Solstice Rugby Sevens at Nottingham before missing out on day two.
Saturday’s group games determined which teams would contest the cup, plate and bowl on Sunday, and the Barbarians got off to a great start beating Nottingham Casuals 47-7.
Oakham lost their next game 26-7 but put up a much better fight against the The Godfathers - a side that had obliterated a strong Oakham side the year before - losing 21-14. The Barbarians had the consolation of being the only team to score a try against this team in the group stage with clinical finishing from Svend Larsson and Pete Woolston.
Oakham then ran riot against a team celebrating a stag party, scoring at will before allowing their opponents to run in a consolation try, which the stag touched down wearing a pink tutu.
Not all of the Barbarians were available the next day and Oakham were unable to field a team for the final group games.
The Barbarians thanked Oakham Tyres, NDB Developments and CHFI for their support.
