Harringworth resident John Hughes witnessed a spectacular scene taking place on Harringworth viaduct.
The landmark was the backdrop for the coming together of a new rail locomotive and an RAF Chinook helicopter ahead of a naming ceremony at Wellingborough

The dramatic scene last week was spotted by John when he heard a Chinook manoeuvring around
the end of Harringworth Viaduct towards Seaton, over the stationary train.

On further inspection with a pair of binoculars he identified it was a Freight Class 66, engine number 66723.

Further investigation revealed the locomotive was one of five which arrived in April to help rail company First GBRf expand its position as the biggest British owned rail freight haulier.

At the Wellingborough depot, Group Captain Turner from the Chinnok's base at RAF Odium and John Smith, managing director of First GBRf, unveiled a plaque naming the locomotive Chinook.

John Smith said: " We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the brave service men and women who serve in areas of conflict like Afghanistan and at First GBRf we wanted to demonstrate our respect for their outstanding commitment and professionalism by naming a loco in their honour."

Bulwick Show

Harringworth finished third on the annual Bulwick Horticultural show.
From a total of 475 exhibits and 68 competitors, Laxton came first with 174 points, Bulwick came second with 106 points.

Harringworth collected 109 points, a much improved performance over last year when the village gained just 80 points Blatherwycke got 74 points.

The runner-up in the cookery section went to Jo Winterton.
The Eastland family cup went to the Boon family with Alfie Boon receiving the pre-school award.

The best junior art Conant cup went to Alfie Boon, who also received the prize for the largest sunflower head together with George Boon.
Maggie Frankland received a first prize for her chutney and her husband Ken received second prize in the photography section.

Circuit training

Victoria Saunders is hoping to set up a weekly evening circuits session at the village hall. The hour long session from 7.30pm to 8.30pm will involve a warm up, 30-40 minutes of exercises and a warm down with lots of stretching.

The exercises will be done for 45 seconds per station and it is up to the individual to work at their own pace according to personal fitness levels. It is hoped to be a fun way to get and stay fit over the winter months and is suitable for any level of fitness.

Victoria has had plenty of experience teaching PE in schools but does not have a qualification to insure her for adult sessions and therefore everyone must take responsibility for themselves.

There will be a cost to cover the hire of the hall which will depend on numbers interested but will be a maximum of £3. If you are interested then please email Victoria at vjsaundersinbarholm@hotmail.com or phone on 01572 747510 and suggest which evening would be preferred.
