A village social club is organising an open day in a bid to attract new members.
Ketton Club in the heart of the village has been a thriving centre of the community since the early 1900s.

The land and the barns that now make up the club were given to the village by a local farmer so the villagers had somewhere to meet, chat and play traditional games.

The club is unique in that it is owned by the members and run by the members of the village.

The club was renowned back in the 1930s for the game of quoits.

Ketton resident Arthur Knox was three times all-England champion and put Ketton Club on the map.

What is now the car park was once the quoit bed.

Arthur's son Gordon used to watch proudly as his dad threw his 9lb metal quoit, trying to get it over the pin set in the clay quoit bed.

Gordon's grandson is a member of the club and is working to attract new members, along with the new committee, headed by chairman Chris Smith.

One of the many events planned to encourage people to join up and enjoy a few drinks, food, games and the friendly atmosphere is an open day on Sunday August, 24.

Club steward John Dillon said: "Although quoits will not be played, there will be hoopla – which is very similar – a lucky dip, apple bobbing, skittles, stocks and many more traditional games for all the family.

The Open Day is from noon to 5pm and will show people that the Ketton Club has plenty to everyone, from the very young to the more mature.

The open day is free and you can even enjoy a free pint with stewards John and Sarah Dillon.

There will be a barbecue and the chance to have a go at one of the many games on offer.

They may also get a chance to chat to local celebrity Geoff Capes who will be popping along to the event.

For further information on the open day please call Ketton Club on 01780 720272.
