Pupils at Whissendine Primary School experienced a cultural transformation as English and physical education were replaced with Mandarin and Tai Chi.
The school held its Chinese week to provide the pupils with a better understanding of cultural diversity.

During the morning pupils learnt background information, while in the afternoon they were free to choose between various activities.

Two teachers from the UK Federation of Chinese Schools, a charity that promotes Chinese language and culture, gave lessons in Mandarin, Chinese calligraphy and taught Chinese songs.

Other activities included meditation, Tai Chi and Chinese numerics and there were creative lessons in Chinese lantern and dragon making.

Although all the lessons were hugely popular, Chinese cooking proved a favourite.

Meg Lucas, deputy headteacher, said: "It was fantastic. We had the older pupils working with and helping the younger ones.

"The week helped them create some wonderful relationships."

The school is hoping to repeat the success of the event with a different culture in the future.
