Professional painter Alan Oliver sent us this stunning image for his contribution for the Rutland Times this month.
It shows a delightful row of very old cottages in Exton on Blacksmiths Lane.
Alan said: “The following I found in ‘The Villages of Rutland’ published by Spiegl Press.
“The last blacksmith to work at the forge in Blacksmiths Lane, now a private garage, was Tommy Royce. He died a young man during the 1914 war, and after this there was not enough work for more than one blacksmith. The last smith to work at the forge behind 3 The Green, was Amos Smith, and he retired in the 1950s.”
