The team behind the Catmose schools in Oakham have revealed that they plan to apply to open a 210-place free school called Barleythorpe Primary.
Catmose College and Catmose Primary say the new primary school would “aim to meet the pupil place need by providing an outstanding provision in the west of Oakham”.
If plans are approved by the Department for Education, the school would open to the first pupils in September 2017.
It will initially offer 210 places with a plan in place to expand to eventually accommodate 420 pupils.
Principal at Catmose College Stuart Williams said: “We are opening Barleythorpe Primary in order to provide an educational hub for outstanding progress and attainment.
“We hope that by opening the new school we will be helping the residents of Oakham and the surrounding area who have struggled to find a local primary school place for their child.
“However, for the school to become a reality we need the support of local parents and urge them to fill in the form that can be found on Barleythorpe Primary’s website.”
Mr Williams said Barleythorpe Primary would provide a “welcoming and happy environment” for children aged between four and 11.
Acting as a feeder school for Catmose College, the school will boast an ethos that is calm and purposeful.
Children will be supported to make a successful and happy start to their school life, will enjoy their time with us and will leave very well prepared to start their secondary education.
Pupils at the school would follow the core national curriculum, ensuring that they are skilled readers and writers, and are highly numerate.
Older pupils at the school will benefit from having close ties with Catmose College, from where specialist teachers will deliver sessions in science, humanities, modern foreign languages and music. This will help to ensure that all children will be ready for the transition to secondary education.
The exact location of Barleythorpe Primary would be decided by the Department for Education but it would need to be sited in order to allow primary aged children living in the new Oakham developments and surrounding area to attend a local primary school.
As part of the application to open a free school, the bid team need to show that there is sufficient demand.
Parents in Oakham and the surrounding villages are encouraged to visit www.barleythorpeprimary.com to find out more information and also fill in a form registering interest and offering their support for the proposed school.
A consultation evening is being held at Catmose College from 4pm to 5pm on Wednesday, February 3.
The event is open to anyone who is interested in hearing a short presentation on Barleythorpe Primary, and there will also be the opportunity for people to have their questions answered.
