Oakham listed in The Sunday Times’ best places to live in Britain

Oakham has been placed at number 51 on The Sunday Times’ list of the best 101 places to live in Britain.

According to the poll, which was based on statistics on transport links, quality of schools, natural beauty, crime rates, property prices, cultural life and employment figures, the town has “good houses, super schools and friendly people”.

The report said: “Oakham sits next to Rutland Water, one of the largest man-made lakes in Europe - a weekend playground for sailing, kayaking, fishing, wildlife-watching, walking or cycling around the 25-mile perimeter. Everyone ends up at the Finch’s Arms, in Hambleton, a gastropub with great views.

“The town itself has a lively market twice a week, independent shops in Mill Street and the High Street, several good pubs and bandstand concerts.”

Stamford topped the list which was published on Sunday. The town was given the top spot because of its architecture, low crime rate and standard of schools.
