Rutland councillor Richard Clifton steps down
Rutland County coun Richard Clifton (Con) has resigned as Ward Member for Oakham South West.
Giving reasons for his resignation, coun Clifton said: "The reason for my resignation is solely due to my recent appointment as chief commercial officer for Shaw Trust.
"With this new role I no longer have the time to carry out my duties as a councillor.
"Additionally, due to the nature of the work, it is likely to lead to conflicts of interest."
Coun Clifton has represented residents in Oakham South West since his election in October 2014.
He was also appointed as a member of the Council’s Cabinet in June 2015, stepping down from his role as Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care and Health last year due to increasing work commitments.
Coun Clifton said it had been "a pleasure and an honour to serve as a councillor, working with councillors and officers and representing the residents of Rutland".
Helen Briggs, Chief Executive of Rutland County Council, said: “We would like to thank Councillor Clifton for the exceptional work he has done as both a Ward Member for Oakham and former Cabinet representative. During his time as a County Councillor, Cllr Clifton has used his considerable knowledge and experience to great effect – making a hugely positive contribution to the authority and providing invaluable support to his constituents. We wish him all the very best in his new role at Shaw Trust.
“A by-election will take place in Oakham South West if we receive a request for an election from two registered electors. An election will then be held to fill the ward member vacancy within 35 days, with further details made available to residents in due course.”
