Rutland Morris have danced at two major Rutland events in the last few days.
On Bank Holiday Monday they made an appearance at the Exton Day where they danced outside the (disappointingly) closed Fox and Hounds.
Their distress was alleviated by the kind sponsorship of a pint of beer by Swans of Oakham.
Dave Casewell, their press attache, said: “It’s always good to come to Exton. We have been dancing here since the inception of the original Exton Street Fair, and are glad to be back in its new more intimate guise. All we need now is the pub to open!”
After this they paid a quick visit to the Sun Inn at Cottesmore to be received by a small but perfectly formed audience.
On the following Sunday they danced, or rather squelched, at the Rutland Show. Their club scrapbook shows that they have danced many times in the rain at this show, but it is always a happy occasion.
They managed three performances, once outside the ‘For Rutland in Rutland’ tombola tent, and twice outside the beer tent!
All three shows were well attended in spite of the damp drizzle which persisted until the early afternoon.
True to form, as soon as the Morris Men left for home the sun came out!
Mike Harnett , one of their musicians, said: “Well, we were alright as we musicians managed to be under cover all the time, but I’m afraid the dancers did get a bit muddy and damp.
“But, as always, we enjoyed entertaining our audience, and by the fact they stayed in the drizzle to watch I think they enjoyed it too!”
