Your News: Summer fete is a ‘great success’
Councillor Dave Ainslie Mayor of Uppingham officially opened the Leighfield Academy Summer Fete.
In his speech he said: “We often hear a lot about British values. In my mind a key British value is when people come together to help other people.
“The Leighfield Summer Fete is a great example of people helping each other to provide much needed funds for the school.”
He also paid tribute to the work done by the Friends of Leighfield School in organising the event.
The weather remained dry throughout the day and helped with a great turnout. Funky Tents provided us with shelter from the sun (and wind)!
The pupils in year 6 ran their own stalls having a £10 per stall budget to work with.
Their stalls included Nerf gun shooting range, sweet grabber, blindfolded drawing challenge, the great Oscani, Mr Walding’s wheel of fortune, candyfloss, roll the 10p, the buckets of eternal doom, sandpit sticks, guess the name of the teddy, treasure map, buzzer, lucky dip and decorate a biscuit.
These pupils learned a great lesson in money management while having fun.
Once again, Mr Walding, Year 6 teacher agreed to get soaked by the pupils either with wet sponges, buckets of water or one minute with a hosepipe. Needless to say this was a very popular exhibition and a great crowd gatherer.
Twenty-five children ranging from reception to year 6 dusted off their dancing shoes to perform their spotlight on dance routine one last time.
The dance, which celebrates the school’s enthusiasm for sport and physical activity included hoops, footballs, ribbons, gymnastics, pom-poms and tap shoes!
It was great to see the children enjoying themselves so much again and they delighted the crowd with their performance.
Head teacher, Debbie Sedgwick said “The fete was a great success again this year and I am delighted that so many people came along and joined us for an afternoon of fun, games and refreshments.
“The fete raises money for the children at Leighfield, which enables us to provide resources and activities to enrich their learning.
“This year we have been able to fund iPads for use within the classrooms, enrichment days to make learning exciting and goals for the school field.
“The Friends of Leighfield School team did a great job of organising the fete and I would like to thank them and all the people who supported us.”
The organisers said “Since 2011 we have raised in excess of £40,000 and this year’s fete raised £3,000 but the summer fete isn’t just about raising money.
“It’s also about having fun and bringing the Leighfield (and Uppingham) community together. We have teachers, pupils and parents all helping. When we all pull together it really does work.
“Thankfully the weather was on our side this year!”
