Down and Pearce join Oakham United
Recently-appointed Oakham United boss Jimmy Brattan’s pre-season preparations have exceeded expectations after an early signing spree.
Brattan has secured the services of Chris Down and Robbie Pearce from higher level clubs while also retaining eight of last season’s squad so far as his side prepare for their return to the Peterborough League Premier Division.
Down and Pearce were with Huntingdon and Bourne respectively in Division One of the United Counties League last season.
And, after also signing highly-rated goalkeeper Chris Redshaw following his move to the area, Brattan is continuing talks with a number of potential newcomers.
He said: “You never know how it’s going to go when you start somewhere new, but so far it’s been very pleasing.
“It’s gone better than I thought. All of the players seem to be buying into what we’re trying to do on and off the pitch.
“We are still chasing several signings and are in talks with players while others have expressed an interest in coming so everything has gone to plan so far.”
Corey Taylor, Mark Wilde, Cameron Brookes, Kieran Bonsall, Steve Jucikas, Ashley Hibbert, Matt Holland and Connor Carr have all committed to the Oakham cause for the coming Premier Division.
And, with a healthy of turn-out players at each pre-season training session, Brattan is delighted with the progress at Lonsdale Meadow.
He added: “A lot of players are on holiday and for some it’s too early to start pre-season so we’ve got to take that into consideration.
“But we wanted to start early so we didn’t get left behind other clubs.
“We are completely rebuilding the club so we had to make an early start and I am very pleased with how it’s gone so far.
“I’ve had great backing from the club in a short space of time.
“Ryan Hunnings has been superb behind the scenes while it’s been great to take a step back and manage the players while letting my assistant AJ Carr do the coaching.
“We’ve had good numbers at pre-season training and the door is always open for anyone to come down because we’ve also got a reserve side to allow players to make the step up.
“Oakham is a lovely area and I want to see as many local players there as possible, but there are a lot of teams in a small catchment area who all want the best players so we’ve got to look outside the box as well.”
Oakham begin their pre-season friendlies on Saturday, July 7, with a home match against United Counties League Division One side Blackstones.
The club are also offering a varity of sponsorship packages during the season, including player, matchday and advertising board backing. For more information e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
