Stamford AFC are back in Lincs Senior Trophy action again tomorrow night (Tuesday) at they face higher-league Gainsborough Trinity at the Zeeco Stadium.

The Daniels beat Spalding United 2-0 on Friday night in the first round of the re-ramped competition which has seen the addition of higher league sides such as Gainsborough into the cup. The Senior Trophy is of course the competition Stamford have won for the last two years.

Gainsborough play one league above Evo-Stik NPL side Stamford in the Vanarama National League North although last season they finished 17th.

Stamford manager David Staff said: “They are a league above us and it will be a different type of game to what we have had so far this pre-season. This will be a good test of where we are at and give us a little more of an idea where we are with our preparation for the league.”

Staff said he was pleased with his side’s defensive display on Friday which saw few clear cut chances created. Jordan Smith scored for Stamford before the break and Ryan Robbins struck from the penalty spot with four minutes to play.

However Staff knows they will have a tougher evening tomorrow. “We will be tested a little more defensively but it aids us to test ourselves a bit and get out of our comfort zones which is what we need to do,” he said.

Staff said it should be a good occasion for the fans as the Zeeco pitch is now ready for its first outing this season and for many it be the first chance they get to see some of the new signing at the club.

Stamford will be without striker Greg Smith once again who is sitting out his final game of a ban which follows on from last season, and Dan Clements will struggle to make kick-off because of work commitments, but could feature from the bench. That situation could be a regular occurrence in midweek games this season.

However new signing David Bell will be available for selection after missing Friday’s game because of the birth of his daughter.

Kick-off of is 7.45pm. If you can’t be there in person stay up-to-date with the action by following { |@Mercuruy_JohnE} on Twitter.
