Oakham United were unable to break down the UCL Division One’s third place side Stewarts and Lloyds Corby on Boxing Day as they lost 2-0 at Sterling Meadows.
However Oakham played a big part in the game and had the majority of the ball on their home park, but for just the second time in the last two months they were kept scoreless by the league’s second best defence, who have given up just 19 goals all season.
S&L were willing to give the Tractor Boys possession and try and hit them on the break.
Moises Rodrigues opened the scoring for the Foundrymen in just the ninth minute, using his pace to speed into the box and beat Simon Dalton with a low strike.
Michael Byrne added a second goal ten minutes before the break after a late gift from Oakham’s defence.
One criticism that can’t be thrown at Oakham is a lack of effort and attitude as they worked incredibly hard to find a way back into the game.
But their failure to take their chances was their downfall on Saturday.
Lewis Leckie as always had his chances, but unlike normal he failed to take them.
Goal scoring defender Dan Jenkins came closest for the Rutland side when he struck the bar with a header for what would have been an equalising score at the time.
In the end Oakham keeper Simon Dalton had to make a great save to deny Dany Reid a S&L third.
