Thrilling last over victory for Oakham; Manzoor leads Sports' surge

Oakham claimed a dramatic one-wicket win in the last over of their Leicestershire League Division One clash at Electricity Sports on Saturday.

Charlie Baker and Ben Southern steered the Rutlanders home after putting on 20 runs for the last wicket to seal their second success of the season.

They had earlier restricted their hosts to 191-7 from 45 overs with Wes Durston making a welcome return to the Oakham ranks by taking 3-36 from 12 overs.

Ed Siddle also struck twice after Andy Deacon had anchored the Sports innings with an unbeaten 81.

Oakham's reply suffered an early setback when the influential Durston was dismissed without troubling the scorers.

This brought Sean Cowley to the crease and he played a pivotal role in the reply by hitting Oakham's top score of 70.

Will Bell blasted 36 to move Oakham closer to victory with Siddle striking a crucial 11 runs.

However, when Chris Larsen was run out for three, Oakham were still 20 runs short of victory with Baker being joined by last man Southern.

Baker blasted a six and took three singles before hitting a four to seal victory in the final over and finish unbeaten on 19.

Unbeaten Ketton Sports continued their push for Division Four East honours with a 104-run win over Kibworth 3rds.

Zeeshan Manzoor was the leading run scorer as Ketton Sports made 213-7 from their 45 overs.

The prolific batsman fell just three runs short of his century as Ashley Rodgers (31), Robin Vitas (24) and Joash Mathys (35no) all made healthy contributions to the Sports tally.

Mathys then followed up last week's five-wicket haul by repeating the feat to help dismiss Kibworth for 109.

Mathys returned 5-16 from nine overs while Will Compton claimed 2-22 as Sports surged to their fourth win from six completed games.

A super spell of bowling from Brian Makwana was the highlight of Market Overton's 60-run defeat against Leicester University Staff in Division Five East.

Makwana condeded just eight runs in 8.1 overs and also took four wickets as the visitors were dismissed for 188.

David Lambert claimed 3-56 from 10 overs while Ryan Thwaites also took two wickets for the concession of 31 runs in nine overs.

Thwaites led the Marko reply after smashing eight fours and a six in his 62, but Mark Hudson (16), Tom Goodliffe (15) and Will Plumb (12) were the only other home batsmen to make double figures as they were dismissed for 128.

Harun Patel was the chief contributor to Marko's downfall as he took 4-38, including the crucial wickets of Makwana, Dale Howkins and Lambert.

Kieran Calnan and Darren Jones both took three wickets apiece for Oakham 2nds as they suffered a heavy 169-run defeat at Asian Sports 2nds.

Vikram Bagoan blasted 18 fours as he made 109 to help Sports post 248-8 from their 45 overs.

Oakham were dismissed for 79 in their reply as Ragesh Popat plundered 4-9 from six overs for the visitors. Mark Owen (15) and Jones (27) were the leading run-makers.

Wakerley and Barrowden are still seeking their first Division Nine East win of the season after a 143-run home loss against Braunstone East.

Chris White took 3-26 from 12 overs while Gareth Packer and Aaron Rawlings both claimed two wickets as Braunstone made 242-9 from their 45 overs.

White (15), Will Miles (18), Shaun Cardell (16) and last man Packer (12) were Wakerley's leading scorers as they were dismissed for 99.
