Tinoco the standout player at Burghley Park

Burghley Park head professional Mark Jackson hosted his annual Pro Shop Christmas Cracker competition last weekend, providing mince pies, sausage rolls and festive wine to all who took part.

Over the two days, 62 members took part, with prizes for the top scores each day. Only one player turned out for both events, Jorge Tinoco, but it was worth it; he finished fourth on Saturday with 34 points, and won the Men’s event on Sunday with an impressive 38 points.

Adam Mayman was the clear winner on Saturday, coming in with 39 points, the highest of the weekend, in spite of blustery conditions which made scoring difficult. Mike Goulding claimed second spot with 36 points, with Graham Jackson taking third place on 34, edging out Tinoco on countback. In the Ladies’ event, where the strong winds had a greater impact on scoring, Michelle Powell mastered the conditions best to take the win with 29 points. Janet Duff was second on 28, and Jan Devlin third.

Sunday saw Jorge Tinoco appear again, and this time he made no mistake, playing steadily to shoot 38 points to take victory ahead of Peter Kelleher on 37. Rod Wright was third on 36, edging out Peter Barnes, Jim Clarke and Terry Austin on countback. Kay Hircock turned in the most impressive performance in the Ladies’ event, coming in with 34 points to claim the win, three points ahead of Nicky Plumtree on 31, with Barbara Newell third on 29.

It was a fitting end to a busy year of 125th anniversary events for the club. The 2016 season starts at 9 am on New Year’s Day for the traditional shotgun Texas Scramble, which always tests the ability of the participants to recover from the previous night’s celebrations.
